The Burg Desk · 2026-05-19

Someone is following kids in a pink animal costume. We are taking this seriously.

This is the kind of story we built Real Burg News for.

Yesterday and overnight, Fredericksburg Police took multiple reports of a person — described in different outlets as wearing a "pink animal costume" or specifically a "Pink Panther costume" — following children around the Burg. WJLA, WUSA9, KTRE, InsideNoVa, and at least one wire service are all carrying it. That much agreement between five competing newsrooms is its own data point: this is not a single mis-tip.

What we know:

  • Multiple sightings, multiple families.
  • Police are actively investigating.
  • The person did not, per current reporting, make physical contact with any child.

What we don't know:

  • Who is in the costume.
  • Whether it is one person or several.
  • Whether this is meant as a prank, a stunt, or something worse.

Here is where Real Burg News earns its name. We are not in the business of sensationalizing a kid's afternoon. We are in the business of being the front porch neighbor who knows what's happening before the rumors do. If you saw anything — the costume, a vehicle nearby, a direction the person walked — Fredericksburg Police have a tip line, and they want to hear from you.

If you have kids walking home from school, walking to friends' houses, or biking the Heritage Trail, this is a "walk in pairs and let someone know your route" week. That's not panic. That's how a town that watches itself stays a town worth living in.

We will update this column as the Burg desk gets more. The headlines from the five outlets running it are in today's local feed at the top of the page.

The Burg watches itself. That's the whole point.
